  
An explanation of some manufacturing terms...
- CD
- compact disc; describes any audio, data, or enhanced disc manufactured in
a standard molding process.
- CD-R
- compact disc recordable; used generally in short-run replication, usually
quantities less than 1000.
- Enhanced CD
- any disc that includes both standard audio tracks and data; also known as
Blue Book, Mixed Mode, CD-I, CD-G, CD+ and Enhanced CD, among others. Current
uses include adding multimedia, web sites, mp3 & RealAudio files, photos &
song lyrics.
- Over/under
- the number of CDs above or below the actual ordered quantity; generally,
any order is considered complete at +/-10%; over/under quantities are
billed/credited on a per/unit basis.
- Silk Screen Printing
- the method used for applying an image on the surface of a CD; can be 1 or
more PMS colors or a 4 color process (CMYK) over a white base coat.
- Inkjet Printing
- the method used for applying an image on the surface of a CDR; can be
black or color.
- Panels & Pages
- panel refers to paper & folds; page refers to print. For example, a
1panel/2page insert is a 4.75" x 4.75" piece of paper printed on both sides. A
2panel/4page insert is 9.5" x 4.75", printed on both sides and folded once.
- 4/1
- standard printing method for jewel case inserts; allows for full (4) color
images on one side and black (1) printing on the reverse.
- 4/4
- full color printing on both sides.
Insert
printed material placed in the front of a CD jewel case. AKA folders &
booklets.
Traycard
printed material placed in the back of a CD jewel case; includes labeling
for the jewel case spine.
Pre-mastering
the process of compiling all audio & data in preparation for making a
glassmaster (for molded CD replication), or a master disc (for CD-R and cassette
short run duplication.)
Bulk CDs
refers to compact discs with no external packaging
